Description
Ukrainian Sorghum 20 is a high-quality grain hybrid intended for growing both for grain and silage. This cereal crop is characterized by high yield and adaptability to various soil and climatic conditions of Ukraine. The vegetative period ranges from 115 to 140 days, plant height varies from 60 to 200 cm, and the mass of 1000 grains reaches 28-30 grams. Sorghum grain can be red or white, possesses high nutritional value, including protein content of about 11%, fats up to 4.5%, carbohydrates 79%, and a significant amount of vitamins and microelements. The grain caloricity is 323 kcal, making it an excellent source of energy and nutrients.
Ukrainian Sorghum 20 is distinguished by its tolerance to soil salinity and high plasticity to types of processing, which allows it to be grown on various soil types, including chernozems and chestnut soils. The crop is light-loving and heat-loving, with an optimal growth temperature range of +30–35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature for seed germination is +12 degrees. Sorghum is sensitive to frost and may die at a temperature of about -1 degree. To increase yield, it is recommended to conduct pre-sowing seed treatment with protectants, as well as apply complex mineral fertilizers taking into account the soil type. Important agronomic techniques include bed preparation, pre-harvest rolling, and subsequent harrowing, as well as inter-row loosening in wide-row plantings.
Ukrainian Sorghum 20 is widely used as a forage crop for farm animals, ensuring the production of high-quality hay and silage. Grain is also used for processing into flakes and flour. The plant has a deep root system up to 2.5 meters, which contributes to drought resistance and effective use of moisture. When growing, it is necessary to control diseases caused by fungi Fusarium and Macrophomina, especially with excessive application of nitrogen fertilizers. Grain harvesting is carried out by direct combine harvesting at the full ripening stage, while for late varieties desiccation is recommended two weeks before harvest.
