Description
The Sudan grass variety "Kamyshinskaya 51" is an annual plant standing from 180 to 220 cm tall with medium-density upright bushes. The stems are round, 6–8 cm thick, and medium in coarseness, with 6–9 internodes per stem. The leaves, 40–45 cm long and 3.5–4 cm wide, are soft, ensuring high feed value both as green mass and hay.
The variety features good leafiness – from 35 to 40 % of the total plant mass when mowed during the single-heading period. The panicle is drooping and loose, 30–35 cm long, while the seeds have a rhombic shape and dark-brown or black color. Green mass yield reaches 25–28 t/ha under dryland conditions and up to 40 t/ha with irrigation.
"Kamyshinskaya 51" develops rapidly, regrows well after mowing, and maintains resistance to lodging, drought, and pests. Significant damage is observed only as small spots of bacterial leaf spot. The vegetative period lasts 100–105 days, and heading maturity is reached by day 50–55.
The variety was developed using family-group selection from a population of medium-late Sudan grass followed by repeated cross-pollination with a mixture of varieties. This ensures stable characteristics and high productivity under various climatic conditions.
