The term Accumulation of refers to the build-up of inoculum (spores, mycelium, or sclerotia) of plant pathogens in the soil, crop residues, or storage facilities. This phenomenon is a primary challenge in modern agriculture, as it often results in "soil sickness" where susceptible crops can no longer be grown profitably without intensive chemical intervention.
The systematic group of pathogens involved is vast, covering fungal organisms like Fusarium spp., Rhizoctonia solani, and various bacteria and soil-borne nematodes. The type of pathogen determines the survival strategy, but the mechanism of accumulation is universally linked to the availability of nutrients and the lack of biological antagonists in the environment.
The biology and lifecycle of these pathogens are often characterized by a dormant phase. They can persist as resting spores or sclerotia for several years. When environmental conditions such as soil temperature and moisture reach optimal levels, these pathogens emerge to infect the host tissue, often causing root rot, vascular wilts, or damping-off, which effectively reduces the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread and accumulation of pathogens include continuous cropping (monoculture), poor drainage, and excessive tillage that disturbs soil microbial balance. The economic impact is severe, often resulting in significant yield losses, increased costs for pesticide applications, and the necessity to switch to less profitable, resistant crops.
Control and protection measures focus on breaking the infection cycle through strategic agronomic management:
- Implementing diverse crop rotations to starve pathogens of their specific hosts.
- Utilizing green manure and cover crops to suppress soil-borne pathogens.
- Applying microbial inoculants (e.g., Trichoderma species) to create competition in the soil.
- Ensuring proper residue management through deep plowing or biological decomposition.
- Using certified, disease-free, and fungicide-treated seeds.
