Description
The term Abrasions in an agricultural context refers to mechanical wear and physical damage to plant tissues caused by abrasive particles such as sand or soil dust during high wind events. Unlike biological pathogens, abrasions are classified as abiotic disorders that physically compromise the plant's surface.
These injuries are not caused by organisms; however, they significantly impact plant pathology. By stripping away the protective cuticle and wax layers, abrasions create entry points for various phytopathogens, acting as a gateway for subsequent secondary infections by fungi and bacteria.
Crops particularly vulnerable to these conditions include sugar beets, maize, and various horticultural crops grown on sandy soils. Early-stage development is the most critical period, where seedling stems and leaves are fragile and cannot withstand the abrasive impact of wind-blown particles.
Environmental conditions favoring abrasions include dry, exposed soil surfaces, intense wind gusts, and a lack of soil cover. These factors lead to accelerated soil erosion and direct mechanical trauma to crops, resulting in stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and in severe cases, the death of young seedlings.
Control measures are primarily focused on soil conservation and wind mitigation:
- Utilization of conservation tillage (No-Till) to keep crop residues on the field.
- Planting windbreaks or shelterbelts to reduce wind speed.
- Establishing cover crops to stabilize the soil surface.
- Applying irrigation to minimize dust suspension and maintain crop turgor pressure.
