Acidovorax is a genus of gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria belonging to the Comamonadaceae family. Within the field of plant pathology, this genus is recognized as a significant threat to global agriculture, as it includes several species that cause devastating bacterial infections in various monocot and dicot crops, disrupting essential physiological processes.

The diseases caused by Acidovorax species are typically characterized as bacterial blights, fruit blotches, and leaf spots. For instance, Acidovorax citrulli causes bacterial fruit blotch in cucurbits, while other strains are responsible for bacterial leaf blight in rice. Symptoms often begin as water-soaked lesions on leaves or stems, which eventually turn necrotic, leading to leaf drop, stunted plant growth, and fruit rotting.

The biology of this pathogen is primarily associated with seed transmission, which allows the bacteria to spread across vast geographic distances. In the field, the pathogen survives in infected plant debris, soil, and alternative weed hosts. Once introduced to a favorable environment, the bacteria colonize the host tissues, utilizing specialized mechanisms to inject effector proteins that suppress the plant's immune system.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the epidemiology of Acidovorax infections. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures facilitate the release and dissemination of bacterial cells from the surface of infected tissues. Wind-blown rain and irrigation systems are the primary vectors for secondary spread, allowing the pathogen to move rapidly through a field during the active growing season.

Management of Acidovorax is challenging due to the lack of effective curative treatments once the disease is established. Therefore, control measures are strictly preventative. These include:

  • Utilizing disease-free, certified seeds.
  • Implementing long-term crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum.
  • Sanitizing agricultural equipment to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Applying copper-based bactericides early in the season to prevent the onset of severe outbreaks.
