Longidorus is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes commonly known as needle nematodes, belonging to the order Dorylaimida. These nematodes are recognized for their exceptionally long body and a highly developed odontostyle (a feeding tube), which they use to pierce the root systems of various host plants. As obligate ectoparasites, they feed from the soil, causing significant physical damage to the plant root tips.

The primary agricultural impact of Longidorus lies in their ability to transmit nepoviruses, such as the Raspberry ringspot virus. When feeding, the nematodes can introduce viral particles directly into the vascular tissue of the plant. Infected crops exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and malformed leaves, which often leads to total crop failure if left unmanaged.

The biological cycle of these nematodes is relatively slow, often taking up to a year to complete depending on soil temperature and humidity. They are obligate parasites, meaning they require living root tissue to complete their development stages. Because they can migrate through soil layers, they are capable of seeking out favorable hosts even when populations are low.

Environmental conditions that favor their survival include well-structured, moist, and loamy soils. They can survive for long periods in the absence of a preferred host, moving deeper into the soil profile to avoid extreme temperatures. Their economic damage is most severe in perennials, including vineyards, orchards, and strawberry fields, where they become established and persistent.
