Description

Stolbur phytoplasmas are destructive plant pathogens classified within the genus Candidatus Phytoplasma. These specialized bacteria lack cell walls and reside specifically in the phloem tissues of host plants, where they interfere with the translocation of nutrients, leading to systemic physiological collapse.

The pathogen primarily affects solanaceous crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplants, as well as various weeds. Typical manifestations include severe leaf chlorosis, plant stunting, flower proliferation (virescence), and the production of woody or malformed fruits, rendering the crop unmarketable.

The biological cycle of Stolbur is strictly dependent on insect vectors, particularly leafhoppers like Hyalesthes obsoletus. The insect acquires the phytoplasma by feeding on infected plants and retains it for its lifetime, subsequently spreading the infection to healthy crops during its feeding activities.

The development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, with hot and arid climates providing the most favorable environment for vector proliferation. Wild weeds such as bindweed serve as critical overwintering reservoirs, allowing the pathogen to persist until the next growing season.

Management and control strategies prioritize an integrated approach, including the strict eradication of host weeds, the application of insecticides to control vector populations, and the use of certified healthy planting material. Effective field management significantly reduces the incidence of this devastating phytoplasmosis.
