Description
Systematic position. Acanonicus is a genus of weevils belonging to the family Curculionidae, order Coleoptera. These insects are characterized by their elongated snouts, which are adapted for feeding on plant tissues and creating precise oviposition sites within the host plant, a feature typical of the Curculionidae family.
Affected crops and damage. The genus primarily impacts various tree and shrub species. By feeding on buds, young shoots, and foliage, the pest significantly reduces the vigor of the plant. In many cases, the economic impact is manifested in reduced yield and weakened structural integrity of the affected woody plants.
Biology and life cycle. Acanonicus undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The timing of the life cycle is strictly synchronized with the phenology of host plants. The larvae typically dwell within the plant tissues, providing them with natural protection from predators and environmental stressors during their most vulnerable developmental stages.
Nature of damage. Larval activity causes physical tunnels within stems and shoots, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients.
