Description

Acanthomia is a genus of insects belonging to the family Coreidae (leaf-footed bugs) within the order Hemiptera. These insects are known as significant agricultural pests in tropical and subtropical climates, where they specialize in attacking various leguminous plants, causing substantial yield losses in food crops.

The primary hosts of Acanthomia include key legumes such as cowpea, pigeon pea, soybean, and common beans. These bugs are particularly destructive during the flowering and pod-filling stages, as they feed directly on the plant's reproductive tissues, which are essential for yield formation.

Regarding their biology, Acanthomia undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. Eggs are typically deposited on the foliage or the pods of the host plants. Both nymphs and adults possess piercing-sucking mouthparts that allow them to extract sap efficiently. Population growth is heavily influenced by seasonal shifts, with higher activity levels during dry or warm weather.

The damage caused by these bugs is characterized by localized shriveling of pods and seeds. When Acanthomia feeds on young pods, it causes deformation, stunted seed development, and often premature flower or pod abortion. Furthermore, the feeding wounds create entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens that compromise the entire harvest.
