Leaf-footed bug

Acanthocephala femorata

Description

Systematic position. Acanthocephala femorata belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Coreidae, commonly known as leaf-footed bugs. These insects are easily identified by their enlarged, leaf-like hind tibiae and a robust body structure, which is typical for the species within this taxonomic group.

Host plants. This species is a generalist herbivore. It feeds on a variety of agricultural and garden plants. Key targets include citrus trees, various solanaceous crops like tomatoes and peppers, as well as several leguminous plants. They prefer to feed on developing fruits and succulent stems where nutrient flow is high.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as leaf litter or crevices in tree bark. As temperatures rise in spring, females deposit eggs on host plants. Nymphs emerge and begin feeding immediately, resembling smaller, wingless versions of the adults before undergoing several molts.

Damage and economic impact. The feeding process involves piercing the epidermis of plants and injecting enzymes to liquefy the internal tissues. This activity causes physical deformation of new growth, premature flower drop, and unsightly spotting on fruits. High infestations significantly reduce both the yield and the marketable quality of affected crops.

Management measures. Effective control of this pest requires a multifaceted approach:

  • Sanitation by removing weeds and plant debris that provide overwintering sites.
  • Hand-picking of larger nymphs and adults on small-scale plots.
  • Application of appropriate insecticides when monitoring shows high populations.
  • Maintaining healthy plants through balanced fertilization to withstand initial feeding pressure.
