Acanthaspidiotus scale
Acanthaspidiotus
Description
Acanthaspidiotus is a genus of scale insects within the family Diaspididae, belonging to the order Hemiptera. These insects are characterized by a protective, wax-like scale that covers their bodies, protecting them from environmental stressors and many contact pesticides. As sap-sucking insects, they have specialized mouthparts designed to tap into plant vascular systems.
The host range of Acanthaspidiotus typically includes various trees and shrubs, often settling on bark, leaves, or fruit. In agricultural settings, they are of particular concern in orchards and nurseries, where they can cause significant aesthetic and physiological damage. Their cryptic nature often allows infestations to go unnoticed until population levels become severe.
The life cycle involves several stages: eggs are laid under the female's protective scale, followed by the emergence of first-instar nymphs known as "crawlers." These crawlers are the only mobile stage and are responsible for the dispersal of the population to new parts of the host plant or neighboring plants. Once a suitable feeding site is found, they settle, start feeding, and begin secreting their protective shield.
Damage is caused by the extraction of plant sap, which leads to stunted growth, yellowing, and leaf drop. In severe infestations, the bark may crack, and branches may die back entirely. The removal of nutrients and the physiological stress placed on the host plant often make it more susceptible to other secondary pests and pathogens, ultimately reducing crop yield and plant vigor.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the life cycle of the pest:
- Implement strict quarantine procedures for incoming nursery stock.
- Prune and destroy heavily infested branches to reduce local population density.
- Time insecticide applications to target the vulnerable crawler stage.
- Apply horticultural oils to smother overwintering stages on bark surfaces.
- Promote biological control by protecting natural predators and parasitoids in the orchard environment.
