Agave scale
Acutaspis agavis
Description
Acutaspis agavis is a species of armored scale insect belonging to the family Diaspididae. It is recognized as a significant pest of various succulent plants, particularly those in the Agavaceae family. Its presence is often overlooked until the infestation reaches a critical stage, making it a persistent challenge for plant growers and nursery managers.
The primary hosts for this insect are agave species, though it may also infest related succulents depending on environmental conditions. The insect feeds by piercing the leaf epidermis and extracting plant sap. This feeding behavior drains the plant of essential nutrients, leading to physiological stress and reduced growth performance in affected crops.
The life cycle begins with the egg stage, progressing to the motile crawler phase. Crawlers are the primary dispersal stage, moving across the plant surface to find suitable feeding sites. Once a crawler settles, it molts, develops a protective scale cover, and remains sedentary throughout the rest of its life, which makes it particularly resistant to traditional contact insecticides.
Damage caused by Acutaspis agavis appears as chlorotic spots, yellowing of the leaf tissue, and necrotic patches. In severe cases, the affected foliage may wilt or die back entirely. Beyond direct damage, the weakened tissue is highly susceptible to secondary pathogens, including fungi and bacteria, which often aggravate the overall health decline of the host plant.
Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for controlling the agave scale include:
- Rigorous phytosanitary inspections of all imported plant material to prevent initial infestation.
- Removal of individual insects using mechanical methods such as rubbing with alcohol-soaked cotton swabs.
- Application of systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the plant and effective against hidden pests.
- Implementation of quarantine zones for new plant arrivals to ensure no pests are introduced into existing collections.
