Acutaspis

Acutaspis

Description

Acutaspis is a genus of insects belonging to the family Diaspididae, commonly known as armored scale insects. These pests are characterized by the production of a hard, waxy protective cover, or "scale," which shields their bodies from environmental stressors and traditional contact-based pesticides.

The host range of Acutaspis is quite broad, often targeting tropical and subtropical plants including citrus species, palms, orchids, and various ornamental shrubs. In commercial orchards and nursery environments, infestations can lead to significant aesthetic damage and reduced plant productivity, as the pests directly compete with the host for nutrients.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, the mobile "crawler" stage, and the sedentary adult stage. The crawlers are critical for the dispersal of the population, as they can crawl to different parts of the plant or be spread by wind, birds, or human maintenance activities before settling down to feed and develop their protective armor.

Feeding damage is caused by the insertion of specialized mouthparts into the plant tissue to suck sap. This leads to symptoms such as chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves), premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and the development of cracks in the bark. If left unmanaged, heavy infestations can lead to limb dieback or even the total death of the host plant.

  • Monitor plants for the presence of small, scaly, or crust-like bumps on stems and leaves.
  • Apply systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the plant and ingested by the scale insects.
  • Use horticultural oils to smother the pests by covering their respiratory pores.
  • Implement strict quarantine measures for new plants entering a collection or orchard.
  • Prune and destroy severely infested plant parts to reduce the overall population pressure.
