Acanthinula

Acanthinula

Description

Systematic position. Acanthinula is a genus of small, air-breathing land snails belonging to the family Valloniidae within the class Gastropoda. Although they are minuscule in size, these terrestrial mollusks can form significant populations in favorable environments, leading to economic and aesthetic damage to various botanical species.

Affected crops and damage potential. These snails are commonly found in humid environments such as nurseries, greenhouses, and moist garden beds. They feed on succulent plant tissues, including young seedlings, leaves of vegetable crops, and ornamental flowers. The damage is particularly severe during the establishment phase of the plant, potentially causing stunted growth or complete loss of vulnerable seedlings.

Biology and life cycle. Acanthinula snails are primarily nocturnal and highly dependent on environmental moisture. Their life cycle typically involves laying eggs in moist soil or decaying organic matter. During periods of drought, they enter an inactive state, hiding in crevices or under debris, which makes them resilient to casual environmental changes and challenging to detect until the population increases.

Nature of injury. The damage is characterized by irregular holes and ragged edges on the leaves. Unlike larger slugs, the grazing marks are smaller but can be numerous, resulting in significant tissue loss. The accumulation of these minute bite marks weakens the plants, making them more susceptible to secondary pathogens, such as fungal infections or bacterial rot.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended practices include:

  • Removing leaf litter and debris that provides shelter for the snails.
  • Adjusting irrigation schedules to reduce surface soil moisture.
  • Applying physical barriers such as crushed eggshells or specialized copper tape.
  • Using molluscicide baits (e.g., ferric phosphate-based) in severe infestations.
Regular monitoring is critical, especially during damp seasons or in highly irrigated growing zones.
