Systematic position. Acanthinula aculeata belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and family Valloniidae. It is a minute land snail characterized by a distinctively sculpted shell with radial prickle-like projections, which serves as a key diagnostic feature for identification.

Biology and life cycle. This species typically thrives in moist environments, such as leaf litter, shaded garden areas, and damp soil. As a hermaphrodite, it deposits eggs in the soil or under decaying organic matter. The life cycle is heavily influenced by moisture availability; the snail is most active during cool, humid weather and may undergo estivation or hibernation to survive unfavorable environmental conditions.

Host plants and economic importance. Acanthinula aculeata can cause damage to various herbaceous plants, including vegetable seedlings, strawberries, and ornamental garden species. While small in size, their feeding activity can be detrimental to young, vulnerable tissue, leading to stunted development and increased susceptibility to secondary fungal pathogens that enter through feeding lesions.

Nature of damage. The pest damages plants by rasping the leaf surfaces with its radula, creating irregular holes and surface abrasions. One of the most apparent indicators of infestation is the presence of dried silvery mucus trails on leaves or soil surface near the host plants. In severe cases, the cumulative damage leads to plant stress and significant reduction in crop yield or aesthetic value.
