Systematic position
Vallonia belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and family Valloniidae. These are tiny terrestrial lung-bearing snails that can be found in various habitats, including agricultural fields and gardens. Despite their diminutive size, they are considered pests due to their ability to feed on young plant tissues and propagate in large numbers under humid conditions.

Crops damaged
These snails are generalist feeders (polyphagous). They attack a wide range of horticultural crops, including leafy greens, seedlings of vegetable plants, and ornamental flowers. They prefer tender, succulent plant tissues, making newly germinated seeds and young transplants particularly susceptible to damage during the early growing season.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle of Vallonia is highly dependent on environmental humidity. Being hermaphrodites, they can reproduce rapidly. Eggs are usually laid in moist soil or sheltered spots under debris. The development from egg to adult is relatively fast, allowing for multiple generations per year under favorable conditions, which leads to sudden outbreaks during wet weather cycles.

Nature of damage and harmfulness
Feeding occurs primarily during nocturnal or overcast hours. The damage manifests as irregular holes or etched patches on leaf blades. Heavy infestations can cause significant stunting of young plants and a total loss of aesthetic value for flowers or leafy vegetables. Furthermore, their mucous trails are unsightly and can attract secondary pathogens, such as fungi, to the injured areas.

Effective management strategies for Vallonia include:

• Maintaining good sanitation by removing leaf litter and weeds that provide shelter.
• Implementing regular soil cultivation to disturb snail habitats and egg-laying sites.
• Creating physical barriers around plants using abrasive materials like diatomaceous earth or crushed shells.
• Applying specific molluscicides based on iron phosphate if the population density reaches economic threshold levels.
