Vallonia excentrica

Vallonia excentrica

Description

Vallonia excentrica is a species of minute air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Valloniidae. It is characterized by its tiny, disc-shaped shell, which is typically colorless or pale yellow. These snails are often found in leaf litter, under stones, or in moist soil habitats, which are common in agricultural fields and nurseries.

This pest primarily feeds on small seedlings and young tissue of various vegetables and ornamental plants. It thrives in humid conditions, making greenhouses and irrigated garden beds highly susceptible to infestation. By feeding on tender shoots, Vallonia excentrica can significantly hinder the establishment and initial growth phase of vegetable crops.

The biology of Vallonia excentrica is intrinsically tied to moisture levels. The life cycle involves laying eggs in moist substrates, such as decaying organic matter or deep soil crevices. Reproduction is continuous during the growing season, provided there is enough humidity, which allows the population to increase rapidly within a short period of time.

The damage caused by this snail appears as small, irregular holes in the leaves and stems of host plants. High density of these pests can lead to significant stunting of young plants, making them prone to secondary infections from fungi or bacteria. In many cases, the loss of leaf area during the seedling stage is critical for the survival of the plant.

Recommended protection and control measures include:

  • Maintaining good hygiene in the field by removing weeds and plant debris.
  • Improving soil drainage to reduce the humidity levels that favor snails.
  • Creating dry, abrasive barriers such as ash or gravel around sensitive crop zones.
  • Applying molluscicides specifically formulated for land snails and slugs.
  • Regular monitoring during humid weather to detect and treat infestations early.
