Acanthococcus is a genus of insects belonging to the family Eriococcidae, order Hemiptera. These small, scale-like insects are significant pests of various ornamental and horticultural crops, often colonizing woody plants and causing gradual decline in plant vigor.
These pests have a wide host range, frequently affecting shrubs and trees such as honeysuckle, currants, and various deciduous forest species. Because of their cryptic appearance and ability to blend with bark texture, infestations often go undetected until significant damage to the plant's health has already occurred.
The biology of Acanthococcus involves a complex life cycle typically featuring a mobile crawler stage and a sedentary adult stage. Adult females are usually protected by a waxy test or secretion, which serves as a defensive barrier against environmental stressors and many traditional chemical treatments.
