Acanthococcus devoniensis, commonly known as the heather scale, is a species of insect belonging to the family Eriococcidae within the order Hemiptera. This insect is a specialized pest that exclusively affects plants of the Ericaceae family, particularly the common heather (Calluna vulgaris).

The damage caused by this insect involves sucking plant sap from the stems and foliage. Through this feeding process, the heather scale removes essential nutrients and moisture, causing severe physiological stress to the plant, which often manifests as stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and dieback of individual branches.

The biology of the species typically involves one generation per year. The insect overwinters as immature nymphs, often sheltering in protected areas such as leaf axils or under the bark. As temperatures rise in the spring, development resumes, leading to the emergence of adult females that secrete waxy ovisacs to protect their eggs.

Visible symptoms of an infestation include the presence of small white cottony masses on the stems, accompanied by the plant's weakened appearance. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a dark fungal coating that blocks sunlight and significantly reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively.
