Acanthococcus orariensis, commonly known as the agent of manuka blight, is a scale insect belonging to the family Eriococcidae within the order Hemiptera. This pest is specifically notorious for its devastating impact on Leptospermum scoparium, a shrub native to Australia and New Zealand, where it causes extensive defoliation and dieback.

The insect’s life cycle involves a sedentary adult female stage protected by a felt-like waxy test. Male insects are winged and capable of flight, facilitating dispersal. The primary spread occurs during the crawler stage, where the young nymphs move across the foliage and branches to establish new feeding sites.

The feeding process involves piercing plant tissues with specialized mouthparts to extract phloem sap.
