Description
Systematic position: The cactus mealybug (Acanthococcus coccineus, formerly classified as Eriococcus coccineus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Eriococcidae. It is a specialized sap-sucking pest that primarily targets Cactaceae species, often causing significant decline in potted plants and greenhouse collections.
Host plants: This pest shows a strong preference for various cactus species, including those in the genera Echinopsis, Mammillaria, and Rebutia. They are particularly attracted to plants with deep ribs, areoles, or dense spines, which provide perfect hiding spots and protection from predators and environmental factors.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg stage, the crawler (larval) stage, and the sedentary adult stage. Adult females are immobile and are typically covered by a white, cotton-like waxy secretion. The crawlers are highly mobile and serve as the primary means of infestation spread within a greenhouse or collection, moving from plant to plant.
Nature of damage and harm: The mealybugs feed on the phloem sap of the cactus. As they feed, they inject toxic saliva into the plant tissues, leading to yellowing, stunted growth, and visible deformation of the plant body. The honeydew excreted by the insects encourages the growth of sooty mold, which can further weaken the plant by blocking light for photosynthesis.
