These insects are characterized by their robust, heavily sclerotized exoskeletons and powerful mouthparts designed for grinding plant tissue. While they are flightless, their mobility and voracious appetite make them a formidable threat to agricultural production in affected regions.

This pest primarily targets members of the Cucurbitaceae family, with a strong preference for melons, watermelons, and pumpkins. In addition to commercial crops, the armoured bush cricket will feed on a wide variety of secondary vegetation, including wild grasses and shrubs. Their polyphagous nature ensures that they can maintain populations even when primary hosts are unavailable, leading to persistent pressure on farmers.

The biological cycle of Acanthoplus speiseri is strictly adapted to arid environments. Eggs are laid deep in the soil and remain dormant through the dry season, waiting for sufficient moisture to trigger hatching.
