Anabrus

Systematic position: Anabrus is a genus of large-bodied insects belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae (katydids). The most significant species within this genus is Anabrus simplex, commonly referred to as the Mormon cricket. These insects are flightless, ground-dwelling species that have adapted to diverse environments, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.

Crops and damage profile: Anabrus is a notorious polyphagous pest capable of consuming a wide variety of plant materials. Its diet includes field crops like wheat, barley, and alfalfa, as well as various garden vegetables and fruits. The damage is characterized by the consumption of leaves, stalks, and grains, often stripping plants down to the ground. In cases of severe infestation, entire crops can be decimated, resulting in total loss for the harvest.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle follows an incomplete metamorphosis process. Eggs are deposited in the soil during the summer and overwinter until the following spring. After hatching, the nymphs undergo several molting stages (instars) over the course of several weeks. As they mature, these insects exhibit gregarious behavior, forming dense, mobile bands that move across the landscape in search of food.

Pest importance: The destructive potential of Anabrus is linked to its ability to aggregate in massive populations. When these insects form migrating bands, their collective consumption rate is overwhelming. They represent a significant threat to food security in affected areas, causing sudden and widespread damage that is difficult to manage once the migration has fully begun.

Protection measures: Effective management requires early detection and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to mitigate the impact:

• Tillage practices that disturb the soil and destroy over-wintering eggs.
• Chemical control using targeted insecticides at the nymphal stages, which are the most susceptible.
• Installation of bait barriers or chemical buffers along the perimeter of agricultural fields.
• Monitoring population densities through professional scouting to time intervention before mass migration occurs.
