Antaxius

Systematic position. Antaxius is a genus within the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae (bush crickets). These insects are known to inhabit various agricultural and wild ecosystems, and under favorable conditions, their populations can reach levels that threaten agricultural production across different regions.

Crops and damage profile. This genus is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. Affected crops typically include cereal grains, legumes, sunflowers, vineyards, and various vegetable crops. The insects primarily consume foliage, buds, and succulent stems, leading to severe defoliation and a reduction in the overall vigor and yield potential of the crops.

Biology and life cycle. Antaxius follows an incomplete metamorphosis life cycle. Typically, the winter season is survived in the egg stage, with eggs deposited in the soil or decaying plant matter. In the spring, nymphs emerge and undergo several molting stages before reaching adulthood. The rate of development is heavily influenced by regional climate conditions, particularly soil temperature and humidity levels.

Economic impact. The primary economic damage is caused by older nymphs and adults, which exhibit high feeding rates. In situations where population density is high, these grasshoppers can devastate crops by consuming large quantities of plant tissue, causing both direct losses in yield and indirect losses due to the weakening of plants, making them more susceptible to secondary infections.

Control measures. Protecting crops against Antaxius requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Deep tillage of soil to disrupt and destroy egg-laying sites;
• Weed management on field margins to reduce alternative food sources;
• Regular field scouting to identify infestation hotspots;
• Application of targeted insecticides when populations exceed the economic threshold;
• Support for natural enemies such as parasitic wasps and insectivorous birds.
