Bush crickets

Bush crickets (family Tettigoniidae) belong to the order Orthoptera and are considered significant agricultural pests in many regions. While they are often omnivorous, large populations can cause severe damage to crops by feeding on leaves, stems, flowers, and developing fruits, making them a target for integrated pest management programs.

The damage caused by these insects affects a wide range of host plants, including cereal grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruit trees. They have strong mandibles that allow them to consume large amounts of biomass. Seedlings and young vegetable transplants are particularly vulnerable, as even minor feeding can result in the complete destruction of the young plant.

The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, including the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females use their sword-like ovipositors to deposit eggs into soil crevices or plant tissues. Eggs typically overwinter in the ground, and nymphs emerge in the spring. These nymphs look similar to adults but are smaller and wingless, progressively molting until they reach maturity.

Symptoms of infestation include shredded leaf margins, irregular holes in the foliage, and consumed buds or reproductive parts of the plant. Because bush crickets are often active at night, farmers may not immediately realize the extent of the damage until significant losses have occurred. High density populations can reduce both the quantity and the aesthetic quality of crops.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. Key strategies include:

• Deep plowing in autumn to disturb and kill overwintering eggs.
• Managing field borders and surrounding weeds to reduce suitable habitats.
• Monitoring population densities throughout the season.
• Applying authorized insecticides during peak feeding times if population thresholds are exceeded.
