While they do not consume plant tissues directly, they are classified as agricultural pests due to their strong obligate mutualism with mealybugs, which they actively cultivate and protect on the root systems of various plants.
The biology of these ants is uniquely tied to the life cycle of the mealybugs they tend. During the nuptial flight, new queens carry a fertilized mealybug nymph with them, ensuring that the new colony starts with an established source of honeydew. This behavior makes Acropyga a major vector for the spread of root-feeding pests.
