This ant species is highly specialized, living primarily underground and maintaining a complex obligate symbiotic relationship with subterranean hemipteran insects, which defines its role as a significant, albeit indirect, agricultural pest.
Affected crops. The species primarily affects plantation crops, including citrus, coffee, and cocoa trees. By fostering root-feeding mealybugs, the ants inadvertently facilitate the spread and survival of these pests on the root systems of economically valuable crops, leading to significant yield losses in affected regions.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is characterized by a unique behavior where founding queens carry a nymph of a mealybug species (typically from the genus Eumyrmococcus) in their mandibles when leaving the maternal colony. This ensures the immediate establishment of a food source for the new colony, as the ants become entirely dependent on the honeydew produced by the protected mealybugs.
Damage and economic impact. The damage caused is primarily physiological: the constant sap extraction by mealybugs weakens the host plant, resulting in chlorosis, stunted growth, and reduced fruit yields.
