Adelgids (Adelges) are a group of specialized insects belonging to the family Adelgidae, order Hemiptera. These pests are strictly associated with coniferous trees, particularly spruce, pine, larch, and fir, causing significant physiological stress and structural damage to their hosts.
The biology of adelgids is characterized by complex life cycles that often involve an alternation between different host tree species and multiple generations per season. They are known for their high reproductive rate, which allows populations to explode in favorable climatic conditions, leading to widespread infestations in forests and gardens.
Feeding symptoms are highly distinct: adelgids extract sap from needles and stems, often resulting in the formation of abnormal gall growths. Infested trees typically exhibit needle yellowing, stunted shoot growth, and a characteristic white, waxy secretion that covers the insects and protects them from predators and environmental stressors.
