Spruce gall adelgid

The spruce gall adelgid (Adelges glandulae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Adelgidae. These insects are closely related to aphids and cause significant damage to spruce trees by feeding on their sap and inducing the formation of characteristic galls on the young shoots.

The primary host for this pest is various species of spruce (Picea). By injecting specific substances during feeding, the adelgid causes the tree to produce abnormal tissue growth known as galls. These structures provide protection and nutrition for the developing nymphs, while causing the branch to become stunted or distorted.

The life cycle of Adelges glandulae is complex and often involves multiple generations per year. Nymphs overwinter on the bark or near the buds of the host plant. Upon emergence in the spring, they feed on tender new needles, triggering the growth of galls within which subsequent generations will develop and mature.

The damage caused by these insects includes reduced growth rates, yellowing of needles, and branch dieback. Severe infestations significantly weaken the tree, making it susceptible to secondary stressors such as drought or fungal infections. Young trees are particularly at risk of permanent deformation or failure to thrive if the pest is left unmanaged.

Management strategies focus on early detection and integrated control. Pruning and destroying infested shoots before the nymphs emerge in early summer can significantly reduce the population. Chemical control is most effective when systemic insecticides are applied at the time of bud break, ensuring the product reaches the nymphs before they are protected inside the galls.
