Systematic position: The Larch adelgid (Adelges laricis) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Adelgidae. These insects are closely related to aphids and are specialized feeders that exclusively attack conifers, causing significant physiological stress to host plants.
Host plants: The primary host for this species is the Larch (Larix), where they feed on needles. Spruce (Picea) serves as the intermediate host, where the insect induces the formation of specific galls that resemble small, woody cones, facilitating the development of different generations.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is complex and often spans two years, involving both sexual and asexual generations. The larvae overwinter on the bark of larch trees, and in the spring, they migrate to the needles, producing a white, cottony wax cover that serves as a protective layer during their feeding stage.
Nature of damage and pest significance: Damage is caused by the extraction of sap, which leads to needle yellowing, premature shedding, and stunted growth. On spruce, the formation of galls stunts new shoot growth and deforms the tree structure, which can severely impact both the ornamental value and the health of the trees in forest plantations.
Control measures: Management requires an integrated pest management approach. This includes the pruning and destruction of infested spruce twigs containing galls before the insects emerge. Chemical control using systemic insecticides is most effective during the early spring and summer periods when crawlers are active and exposed.
