Adoretus

Description

The genus Adoretus belongs to the Scarabaeidae family, commonly known as leaf-chafers or scarab beetles, within the order Coleoptera. These insects are notorious pests in tropical and subtropical regions, where their voracious appetite and rapid reproduction rates can lead to significant agricultural losses.

Adoretus species are polyphagous, meaning they feed on a wide range of host plants. They are frequently reported as major pests of grapevines, fruit trees such as apples, peaches, and citrus, as well as various ornamental shrubs and legumes. Both the adult beetles and the larvae (white grubs) pose threats to plant health at different stages of development.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles are primarily nocturnal, feeding on foliage during the night and seeking shelter in the soil or under debris during the day. Larvae develop underground, feeding on decaying organic matter and fine roots, which can affect the nutrient uptake of the host plants.

The most distinctive type of damage caused by adult beetles is leaf skeletonization. They consume the interveinal tissues of the leaves, leaving behind a complex network of veins. Severe infestations can cause complete defoliation, leading to stress, reduced fruit quality, and weakened immune systems in trees, making them susceptible to other diseases and environmental factors.

Effective management requires an integrated approach:

  • Cultural practices such as deep tillage to disrupt the soil-dwelling larvae.
  • Installation of light traps during peak adult activity to reduce population numbers.
  • Application of selective insecticides during the evening when the beetles are most active.
  • Monitoring of plant foliage to trigger timely interventions before damage reaches economic thresholds.
