Yellowish beetle
Adoretus ictericus
Description
Taxonomic classification. Adoretus ictericus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species, commonly known within the subfamily Rutelinae, is characterized by its nocturnal behavior and potential impact on various agricultural and horticultural crops in specific geographic ranges.
Host range. The beetle is a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plants. Common hosts include vineyards, orchard trees, and various shrubs. Due to its feeding habits, it can become a significant nuisance in nurseries and integrated orchard systems where leaf integrity is essential for plant vigor.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults are typically nocturnal, feeding on foliage during the night and seeking shelter in the soil or under leaf litter during the day. Larvae develop in the soil, primarily feeding on decaying organic matter and fine roots of nearby plants.
Damage patterns. The most visible damage is caused by adult beetles feeding on the foliage. They consume the interveinal tissue of leaves, resulting in a characteristic "skeletonized" appearance. Heavy infestations lead to extensive defoliation, which severely stresses the host plant, inhibits fruit development, and reduces the overall yield potential.
Control strategies. Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as regular soil cultivation during the pupal stage can significantly reduce beetle populations. Chemical control is most effective when applied as a foliar spray in the evening, coinciding with the peak nocturnal activity of the adults. Monitoring the emergence of adults is crucial for timely and effective application of treatments.
