The wheat beetle (Anisoplia austriaca) is a member of the Scarabaeidae family and acts as a significant pest for cereal crops. Adult beetles are characterized by their robust bodies and are known for their destructive feeding habits during the maturation stage of cereal ears, causing substantial yield losses in agricultural regions.
While primarily targeting wheat, rye, and winter barley, these beetles have a broad host range. During outbreaks, they can damage diverse crops including oilseed rape, soybean, fodder beet, common flax, cabbage, watermelon, and melon. This adaptability makes them a persistent challenge for integrated crop management.
The biological cycle of the wheat beetle spans two years. Larvae develop underground, feeding on plant roots and decaying organic matter, which can affect crop vigor from below. Once they transition into adults, they emerge to feed on the reproductive parts of the crops, specifically targeting the developing grains.
The economic impact is high, as the beetles consume the grain contents and frequently knock grains to the ground, causing direct yield reduction. Infested fields often suffer from significant grain loss, and the quality of the remaining harvest is compromised, often requiring additional cleaning and processing.
Management practices focus on both mechanical and chemical control. Key strategies include early harvest techniques to limit exposure time, deep tillage in the autumn to disturb larval soil environments, and crop rotation. Chemical control via insecticide spraying is recommended when the adult population reaches economic threshold levels during the peak swarming period.
