The Pacific clearwing moth (Aegeria pacifica) is a species of moth belonging to the family Sesiidae, known for its ability to cause significant damage to woody plants. These moths are famous for their Batesian mimicry, evolving to look like wasps to deter predators.
This pest primarily infests various fruit-bearing trees. The larvae are borers, meaning they spend the majority of their life cycle tunneling through the bark and phloem of the host tree, which compromises the plant's vascular system and overall vitality.
The biological development of this species is complex. Females lay eggs near bark crevices or damaged areas on the trunk. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the wood and continue to feed internally for one or two seasons. They overwinter as larvae within the galleries they have carved before pupating near the surface.
