Aegeria rhynchioides is a species of clearwing moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. This pest is a significant threat to various woody plants, as the larvae cause internal damage by boring into the bark and cambium layer, often remaining concealed from standard visual inspections until substantial damage has already occurred.

The host range of Aegeria rhynchioides primarily includes various fruit-bearing trees. These pests are particularly attracted to weakened or stressed specimens, where they bore into the phloem and xylem, effectively disrupting the plant's vascular network. Both industrial orchards and home garden trees can suffer from severe infestations if left unmonitored.

The life cycle of the moth typically spans over a single year or more depending on environmental factors. Adult moths resemble wasps, a form of Batesian mimicry that offers protection against predators. The females deposit eggs in bark fissures; upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the host plant to feed, which leads to structural damage and physiological stress for the tree.

Symptoms of an infestation often include visible signs such as sap exudation, frass (larval excrement) accumulation on the bark surface, and the gradual dieback of branches. If the trunk is girdled by larval galleries, the entire tree may wilt or die. This pest is considered economically damaging as it lowers fruit quality and drastically shortens the lifespan of the host tree.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective strategy for mitigating the impact of Aegeria rhynchioides. Essential practices include ensuring tree vitality through proper irrigation and fertilization, prompt removal of dead or heavily infested wood, and the application of pheromone-based mating disruption techniques. Chemical control, when necessary, should be timed with the adult emergence period to maximize efficacy.
