Alcathoe clearwing moth

Systematic position. The genus Alcathoe belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. These insects are commonly known as clearwing moths, distinguished by their unique appearance, which closely mimics wasps or hornets, a defensive adaptation known as Batesian mimicry.

Host plants. These pests are primarily known for attacking various plant species, particularly those within the Rosaceae family and the genus Clematis. They are considered specialized borers that focus their feeding activity on the root crowns and the bases of stems, which is critical for the plant's overall health and stability.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs near the base of the plant. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the tissue. This internal lifestyle makes the larval stage protected from many external environmental factors and natural predators.

Damage characteristics and impact. The larval activity creates internal galleries in the wood, effectively girdling the stem or roots. This destruction of vascular tissue leads to wilting, stunted growth, and death of the plant. Because the damage occurs internally, it is often difficult to detect until significant structural failure has already occurred.

Protection measures. Managing clearwing moths requires a combination of monitoring and intervention techniques:

• Regular monitoring for entry holes and frass near the soil line.
• Pruning and destroying infested stems to prevent further larval maturation.
• Using pheromone-based traps to identify peak flight times of adult moths.
• Applying systemic insecticides as a preventive measure for high-value plants.
• Improving plant vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to help plants withstand minor infestations.
