Description
Systematic position: Aelia klugii is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae, commonly known as shield bugs. It is recognized as a significant pest of cereal crops, sharing similar ecological niches and morphological features with the notorious sunn pest (Eurygaster integriceps).
Crops damaged: This bug primarily targets various cereal crops, including winter and spring wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In the absence of agricultural crops, it utilizes wild grasses as alternative hosts, which allows the population to persist and migrate into fields during the growing season.
Biology and life cycle: Adult bugs hibernate in forest strips, leaf litter, or dry grassy areas. In spring, as temperatures rise, they migrate to cereal fields. After mating, females lay eggs on the leaves of plants. The offspring pass through five nymphal stages before reaching the adult stage, which feeds on ripening grains during the summer months.
Character of damage and economic importance: The damage is caused by the bug's piercing-sucking mouthparts. By injecting salivary enzymes into the grain, the bug breaks down proteins, which severely degrades the baking quality of flour (the gluten structure is destroyed). Plants damaged during the early vegetative stage may show stunted growth or white, empty heads.
Control measures: Effective management relies on an integrated approach to reduce population levels below the economic threshold. Key strategies include:
- maintaining strict crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle;
- removing weeds and stubble from field margins to eliminate overwintering sites;
- performing regular field monitoring during the critical stages of crop development;
- utilizing targeted chemical treatments with insecticides when pest density exceeds thresholds during the nymphal development period.
