Siberian Aelia

Siberian Aelia (Aelia sibirica) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. This species is widely distributed in steppe and forest-steppe zones, causing substantial economic losses to cereal production through its feeding habits.

The primary hosts for this pest are cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. During outbreaks, the population density of these bugs can be high enough to cause severe damage to both vegetative tissues and developing grains, leading to significant reductions in total crop yield.

The life cycle of the insect is highly synchronized with regional climatic conditions. Adult bugs overwinter in leaf litter, debris, or dry vegetation on forest edges and fields. In spring, when temperatures rise, they migrate to cereal crops to mate and lay eggs. Nymphs pass through five instars, feeding actively on the plant sap until they reach maturity.

The damage is caused by the bugs piercing plant tissues and injecting saliva containing enzymes that degrade proteins. This process stunts plant growth and prevents proper grain development. Furthermore, the saliva significantly impairs the baking quality of flour, as the enzymatic activity degrades the gluten structure within the wheat grain.
