Agonoscelis stink bug

The genus Agonoscelis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae, commonly known as stink bugs. These insects are recognized as significant pests in agriculture due to their piercing-sucking mouthparts, which they use to extract sap from various parts of the host plants, including leaves, stems, and fruits, leading to reduced vigor and yield loss.

These pests have a wide host range, attacking various crops such as cereals, legumes, brassicas, and solanaceous vegetables like tomatoes and eggplants. They are particularly attracted to the reproductive stages of the plants, clustering on flower buds and young fruit, which often results in the abscission of these organs or severe deformation of the harvest.

The biological cycle of Agonoscelis involves incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, nymphal stages, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in distinctive clusters on the underside of leaves. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperatures, with warmer climates accelerating nymphal development and allowing for multiple generations per growing season.

Damage is characterized by localized necrosis, wilting, and stunting of the affected parts. As they feed, the bugs inject digestive enzymes into the plant tissue, which causes chlorotic spots and facilitates the secondary entry of fungal and bacterial pathogens. Crops affected by heavy infestation often lose their marketability and fail to meet quality standards.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on prevention and chemical control. Growers should prioritize the following actions to minimize losses:

• Strict weed control to eliminate alternative hosts and refuge sites.
• Monitoring the field density through visual inspection and pheromone trapping.
• Application of systemic insecticides during the peak activity of nymphs.
• Post-harvest cultivation techniques such as plowing to reduce the population of overwintering adults.
