Oak Splendor Beetle

Agrilus coxalis

Description

Systematic position. The Oak Splendor Beetle (Agrilus coxalis) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. These metallic wood-boring beetles are recognized as significant pests that specifically target oak species, causing substantial physiological stress to mature trees and younger saplings alike.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this insect are trees belonging to the genus Quercus. While it shows a preference for specific oak species, the beetle frequently attacks weakened trees in both native forests and urban landscapes. The ability of the beetle to thrive in stressed trees makes it a key factor in tree decline across its native and introduced range.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles typically emerge in late spring or summer to feed on foliage and mate. Females lay their eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the inner bark and phloem, where they feed in a serpentine pattern, effectively girdling the tree and disrupting vascular functions.

Damage and pest status. The presence of Agrilus coxalis is often indicated by thinning crowns and branch dieback. Internally, the larvae create galleries packed with frass that prevent the transport of nutrients. As the infestation progresses, trees exhibit bark cracking, sap flow, and eventually total mortality if the pest population reaches high density.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include:

  • Regular monitoring of tree health to identify infestations early.
  • Sanitation, involving the removal and destruction of infested branches or entire trees.
  • Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil management to increase natural resistance.
  • Application of systemic insecticides for high-value urban or ornamental oak trees.
