Durel's buprestid beetle

Durel's buprestid beetle (Agrilus dureli) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. These insects are well-known wood-boring pests that target various deciduous tree species. Like other members of the genus Agrilus, they possess a metallic sheen and are specialized in developing beneath the bark of their host plants.

The host range of this pest primarily includes broad-leaved trees. While they are often considered secondary pests that attack stressed or dying trees, they can become primary invaders in regions where host conditions are unfavorable, causing widespread damage to urban and forest landscapes alike.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults are active during the warmer months, feeding on foliage to mature before mating. Once mated, females deposit eggs in the bark crevices of host trees, ensuring that the next generation of larvae has immediate access to food sources.

The larvae are the most destructive stage, excavating galleries within the cambium and inner bark layers. These galleries disrupt the translocation of water and photosynthates, leading to tree decline, branch dieback, and eventual death of the affected tree. The damage is often irreversible once the galleries encircle the trunk or main branches.
