Horn's buprestid

Agrilus horni is a species of jewel beetle belonging to the Buprestidae family within the order Coleoptera. As a specialized wood-boring pest, it represents a significant challenge for arborists and foresters. The genus Agrilus is known for including some of the most destructive forest pests, and Agrilus horni is no exception, primarily impacting the structural integrity of its host plants.

The primary hosts for this beetle are trees within the Cercis genus. The larvae feed within the cambium and phloem layers of the trunk and branches, creating tunnels that disrupt the flow of water and nutrients. This feeding behavior often leads to canopy dieback and, if the infestation is severe or the tree is already stressed, can result in the complete mortality of the specimen.

The life cycle of the Horn's buprestid typically spans over one or more years, depending on environmental factors. Adult females lay eggs on the bark surface or within crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the tree, beginning their development within the subcortical layers. They undergo several larval instars before pupating inside the wood and emerging as adults through characteristic D-shaped holes.

Signs of infestation are often subtle until significant damage has occurred. Early indicators include general loss of vigor, thinning foliage, and localized branch wilting. Closer inspection of the trunk may reveal bark cracking, necrotic patches, and the aforementioned exit holes. Early detection is crucial to preventing the spread of the beetle to nearby healthy host trees.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to mitigating the damage caused by this buprestid.
