Agrilus prionurus is a species of metallic wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Buprestidae, order Coleoptera. Known as the acacia borer, this insect is a significant pest that specializes in damaging various species of Acacia trees, often causing severe stress or mortality in infested host plants.
The primary host range includes trees within the genus Acacia. These beetles are particularly problematic in arid and semi-arid regions where these trees serve as vital landscape or ecological components. By targeting the vascular tissue of the tree, the larvae impede nutrient flow, leading to localized dieback and eventual tree decline.
The biological cycle of this borer involves a complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles emerge during warm months, mate, and deposit eggs into bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae bore through the bark to feed on the nutrient-rich phloem and cambium layers. The development stage can span one or more years, depending on environmental temperature and tree health.
Damage is characterized by the presence of S-shaped galleries carved under the bark, which are typically packed with frass. The exit holes made by emerging adults are distinctly D-shaped. As the larvae consume the inner bark, the cambium is severed, leading to branch wilting, foliage yellowing, and thinning crowns, which significantly shortens the lifespan of the host.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management strategy. Cultural practices, such as pruning and destroying infested wood before the beetles emerge, are essential. Systemic insecticides can be utilized on high-value ornamental trees to prevent infestation. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil management is crucial for increasing natural resistance to these pests.
