Hazel buprestid beetle

Agrilus pseudocoryli

Description

The hazel buprestid beetle (Agrilus pseudocoryli) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of hazelnut trees (Corylus species), often causing long-term damage to both commercial orchards and natural forest populations.

This pest primarily infests the stems and branches of hazel trees. By feeding on the cambium and inner bark tissues, the larvae disrupt the vascular system of the tree, significantly impairing the transport of water and nutrients from the roots to the canopy, which leads to stunted growth.

The life cycle of Agrilus pseudocoryli is closely synchronized with the growth stages of the hazel tree. Adult beetles emerge in spring, feeding on the leaves before mating. Following oviposition on the bark, the larvae tunnel underneath, where they feed and develop, typically overwintering within the tree tissues before pupating in the spring.

Damage symptoms include branch dieback, yellowing foliage, and a general decline in tree health. Over time, the galleries carved by the larvae can weaken the structural integrity of the branches, making them susceptible to wind breakage and secondary infections by pathogens or other wood-boring insects.

  • Sanitary pruning of infested and dry branches during dormancy.
  • Removal and destruction of heavily infested trees to reduce the population.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight period of adult beetles.
  • Maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation.

Managing the hazel buprestid beetle requires vigilant monitoring and proactive measures. Because the larval stage is hidden beneath the bark, conventional contact pesticides are often ineffective once the infestation is established, making early detection and preventative maintenance the most critical aspects of Agrilus pseudocoryli control.
