Description
Systematic position. The oak buprestid beetle (Agrilus quercicola) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. It is a highly specialized wood-boring insect that significantly impacts the health and vitality of oak forests worldwide.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this pest are various species of the genus Quercus. While the beetle often targets weakened or stressed trees, especially those suffering from drought or soil compaction, established populations can successfully colonize healthy, mature oaks.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the beetle typically spans one to two years depending on environmental conditions. Adults emerge during the summer months, feed on foliage for maturation, and mate. Females then deposit eggs on the bark surface, where the emerging larvae bore into the phloem and cambium layers.
Damage and severity. Larval activity involves creating complex, zigzagging galleries under the bark, often packed with frass. This feeding behavior disrupts the translocation of water and nutrients throughout the tree. Over time, this leads to branch dieback, crown thinning, and eventually the death of the entire host tree.
