Description

The sinuate pear tree borer, scientifically known as Agrilus sinuatus, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. It is a significant pest primarily affecting pome fruit trees, often causing severe damage that can lead to the loss of entire branches or tree death if not managed correctly.

The pest primarily targets pear, apple, hawthorn, and sometimes mountain ash trees. Its larvae cause extensive damage by feeding beneath the bark, specifically targeting the cambium layer. This disrupts the tree's ability to transport nutrients and water, leading to gradual decline and stunted growth.

The life cycle of the sinuate pear tree borer is completed in one year. Adults emerge in late spring or early summer, feed on the foliage, and then lay eggs in cracks in the bark. The larvae hatch and burrow immediately into the tree, creating long, winding galleries that persist until they overwinter in pupal chambers.

Damage assessment is critical, as early signs often involve thinning foliage, yellowing leaves, and the presence of zigzag-shaped tunnels under the bark. As the infestation progresses, bark cracking and dieback become evident, making the trees susceptible to wood-rotting fungi and other secondary pests.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring for adult activity is essential for timing insecticide applications. Additionally, gardeners should practice rigorous sanitation, including the pruning and immediate destruction of infested branches to prevent the spread of the next generation of borers within the orchard.
