Description

The Cinnamon whitefly (Aleurocanthus cinnamomi) is an insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is recognized as a significant threat to various evergreen plants, particularly those within the Lauraceae family, in tropical and subtropical regions.

Host plants primarily include trees of the genus Cinnamomum. The pest has evolved to thrive on these specific hosts, utilizing the foliage for both nutrition and reproduction. Due to its adaptability, it can quickly establish colonies on nursery stock and ornamental plantations if not properly monitored.

The biology of Aleurocanthus cinnamomi involves multiple developmental stages: egg, nymphal stages, and adults. The nymphs are particularly damaging as they are sessile, remaining attached to the underside of leaves for extended periods while extracting phloem sap from the host plant.

The damage caused by this pest is twofold. Direct feeding results in chlorosis, yellowing, and stunted growth of the host plant. Indirectly, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the leaf surface, further reducing the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and potentially leading to foliage drop.
