Waxy spiralling whitefly

Aleurocanthus inceratus is a harmful insect species within the Aleyrodidae family, belonging to the Hemiptera order. Known as a relative of the citrus blackfly, this pest is a significant threat to subtropical and tropical agriculture, often spreading through international trade of nursery stock and fruit-bearing plants.

The primary hosts for this whitefly species are plants of the Rutaceae family, particularly Citrus species. However, it can also infest various other ornamental and woody plants. The pest feeds predominantly on the undersides of leaves, which allows it to remain unnoticed by growers until the population density reaches levels that cause visible damage.

The life cycle of this whitefly involves an egg stage, three larval instars, a puparium stage, and the adult phase. Female insects lay their eggs in circular or spiral patterns on the leaf tissue. Optimal development occurs in warm, humid environments, where the species can complete multiple generations per year, leading to rapid population explosions.

Direct damage is caused by sap-sucking, which leads to plant chlorosis and stunted growth. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This layer of fungus covers the leaves, significantly reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity and forcing the tree into a state of severe physiological stress.

Management strategies for this pest are essential for agricultural sustainability:
