Description
Systematic position. Aleurocanthus nigricans belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in tropical and subtropical climates, posing a threat to both commercial citrus production and private orchards due to its rapid spread.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this species are citrus plants, including oranges, lemons, and mandarins. However, its host range is quite broad, as it can adapt to various broad-leaved trees and shrubs, which makes eradication efforts challenging when the pest is present in diverse ecosystems.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, three larval instars, a pupal stage, and the adult fly. Eggs are typically laid in distinct spiral patterns on the underside of leaves. As the larvae mature, they become sessile and develop a thick, dark, and spiny cuticle, which serves as a defensive mechanism against external threats and environmental stress.
Damage and harmfulness. The damage is caused by the direct withdrawal of plant sap, which reduces the vigor of the tree. The secretion of honeydew is particularly harmful as it supports the growth of sooty mold. This fungus covers the leaf surface, significantly reducing photosynthetic activity and often leading to premature leaf drop and fruit loss.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:
- Implementation of strict quarantine protocols for imported plant material.
- Application of systemic insecticides that target the sap-feeding stages.
- Introduction and preservation of beneficial natural enemies, such as parasitic wasps.
