Black citrus whitefly

Aleurocanthus nubilans

Description

Aleurocanthus nubilans is a significant pest species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. As a member of the whitefly group, it poses a recurring challenge to citrus orchards worldwide, often necessitating strict agricultural monitoring to prevent outbreaks in non-infested areas.

The primary host plants for this species are members of the Rutaceae family, particularly the genus Citrus. However, field observations indicate that the pest can also infest other plant families, demonstrating a level of polyphagy that requires vigilance from growers in regions where tropical or subtropical climates prevail.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, several nymphal instars, and an adult stage. Adult females lay eggs on the underside of leaves, often in characteristic patterns. Upon hatching, the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, move briefly across the foliage before settling to feed. Subsequent nymphal stages remain stationary, developing into puparia from which adults emerge.

Damage is caused both directly and indirectly. Direct feeding by nymphs extracts vital sap from the host plant, causing chlorosis, stunted growth, and leaf curl. Indirectly, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold (capnodium), which covers leaf surfaces, inhibits gas exchange, and severely impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control Aleurocanthus nubilans. This includes:

  • Utilizing biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps (e.g., Encarsia species).
  • Implementing systemic insecticide treatments during peak crawler activity.
  • Maintaining strict quarantine protocols for imported plant materials.
  • Regular pruning to improve canopy ventilation and reduce humidity conducive to sooty mold.

Sustainable control depends on accurate identification and timing of interventions. By monitoring the density of nymphs and the presence of natural enemies, growers can minimize chemical inputs while maintaining plant health and commercial fruit quality.
